India-Australia Strategic Ties Scale New Heights: PM Modi Accorded Ceremonial Welcome in Melbourne

MELBOURNE: Marking a significant milestone in bilateral relations, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was accorded a warm ceremonial welcome at Government House in Melbourne today. The reception launched the high-profile Third India-Australia Annual Summit, hosted by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

The meeting underscores the strengthening bond between the two democracies as they continue to expand cooperation across various strategic sectors.

Major Agreements on Civil Nuclear Energy and Critical Minerals

Following one-on-one and delegation-level talks, both leaders reviewed the robust progress under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership:

  • Civil Nuclear Pact: PM Modi announced a landmark nuclear energy agreement that paves the way for Australia to supply uranium for India’s civil nuclear program.

  • Critical Minerals Corridor: The two nations agreed to advance an exclusive critical minerals corridor, ensuring a resilient supply chain for essential tech and transition components.

Unveiling of the Joint Defence and Security Declaration

Addressing growing geostrategic challenges in the Indo-Pacific region, the prime ministers adopted a comprehensive Joint Declaration on Defence and Security Cooperation:

  • Defence Innovation Corridor: A new corridor will be established to foster collaboration between defence startups and manufacturers across both borders.

  • Maritime Security Roadmap: An India-Australia Maritime Security Collaboration Roadmap was unveiled alongside a fresh pact signed between the Indian Coast Guard and Australia’s Maritime Border Command.

  • Counter-Terrorism & Interoperability: Both leaders reaffirmed an unwavering joint commitment to combat global terrorism, enhance military exercises, and expand information-sharing mechanisms.

Repatriation of Ancient Indian Artefacts

In a gesture of deep cultural respect, Australia facilitated the voluntary return of three ancient cultural artefacts of Tamil Nadu origin. The returned treasures include:

  1. A historic stone sculpture of the sacred Nandi.

  2. A metal Trident featuring the image of Goddess Bhadrakali.

  3. A highly revered stone statue of the six-headed Karthikeya.

PM Modi extended his gratitude to PM Albanese for the exceptional hospitality and celebrated the vibrant Indian diaspora, describing them as the active “living bridge” driving the deep partnership forward
