The 1987 J&K Assembly election was rigged, with the Congress-NC alliance winning 66 of 76 seats. The episode became a watershed moment in Kashmir’s political history and was as an important trigger for the insurgency that followed.

Even Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has described the rigging of the 1987 election as a “major mistake”, saying it contributed to young Kashmiris losing faith in the democratic process.
